It’s the end of a very long Saturday, and I’m ready for a hot shower and soft mattress. I wait for my tips at the end of the bar. Next to me, a leggy brunette drums her fingers impatiently on the polished wood bartop. Jaxon is busy restocking glasses, and I somehow inherited the Good Samaritan gene from my grandma, so I clear my throat and ask if she needs help. By the look on her face you’d think I had asked if she’d seen Bigfoot.

She rolls her eyes and looks down her nose at me. “Yeah. No thanks.”

Seriously? My inner badass wants to say, “Bitch please. We’re closed. You’re lucky I even asked,” but the angel on my shoulder quickly shoves a hand over the badass’s mouth.

Jaxon must have read my thoughts through my fake smile because he walks up, wiping the bottom of a margarita glass.

“I’ve got her, Maks.” He hands me my tips.

Shortly after my awkward encounter with Cal in his office, Carlos handed over the task of tip-passing to Jaxon. That was over a week ago, and my stomach still drops every time I find myself in the hallway glancing at that door. I haven’t seen Cal since. I’m not sure I want to. I have wondered if he’s okay, if he went to the hospital, if he got stitches. I’ve even wondered what would have happened if he’d actually let me help him. But none of that matters because those are all things I’ll never know.

Jaxon’s voice drags me away from my thoughts.

“You can go,” he says with a smile.

Recognition hits. The brunette isn’t waiting for a drink. She’s waiting for him.

I mentally cringe, knowing he can do so much better. She might be a supermodel on the outside, but she’s not winning any awards with her personality.

She huffs a chuckle over her bottle of sparkling water. “Max? Your name is Max?”

I paint on my best smile. “Actually it’s Makenna. Maks is something my friends call me.” I tap the bar top with the palm of my hand and turn my attention to Jaxon. “Have a great night, Jax.” And without giving the woman any more underserved attention, I turn to walk out the door.
