CHAPTER 30
Both my dad and I couldn’t believe our eyes. Although Murray was unmistakably injured, he had somehow found the strength and courage to come to our rescue.
Like a ghost, the dog had snuck up on the burglar and then had attacked the guy, from behind. I was shocked to see Murray. I had thought for sure that my pal had been killed.
“Yes! That‘s it, Murray,” my father shouted words of encouragement. “Get him, boy! Tear that son of a bitch apart.”
“Holy crap!” I said, in awe, watching the gun abruptly slip out of the robber‘s hand. The guy was being mauled. Murray woofed and growled viciously. It was a dramatic and deafening assault. By the way in which Murray had grabbed hold of the back of the guy’s neck, the dog seemed to be, with his fangs, attempting to puncture the thief’s jugular vein. It was hard to imagine that this was the same dog my parents had given to me for my birthday the year before, when Murray had just been a mere pup.
“Sic him boy! Sic him!” My father charged forward, bent over, and then, from the carpet, he quickly scooped up the Smith & Wesson pistol.
“All right,” he shouted, directing the gun at the robber, who, because of the dog’s ferocious attack, had been forced down on his hands and knees. “That’s enough, Murray. I’ll take it from here.”
Even with my father having given that direct order, for approximately another minute, Murray wouldn’t stop his assault. When he finally did, the dog hunkered in the corner of the room, near the piano. He stopped barking and growling and instead he began to whimper.
It was more than apparent to me that Murray was in a great deal of pain. I felt so bad; I almost burst into tears.
Meanwhile, the burglar huffed and puffed, while clutching, with one of his gloved hands, the back of his torn up neck.
My father walked over to him and, from the guy’s head, he ripped off the stocking. In terms of appearance, the thief, in my opinion, with his dark brown mustache and goatee, looked like the actor Robert Downey Jr. However, unlike Robert Downey Jr., this guy was a total scumbag.
“So now it looks like the tables have turned,” my dad said to the crook, in a blatantly taunting tone.
The thief grumbled.
“Yup,” my dad added. “Looks like a dog really is a man’s best friend after all. Or should I say, his owner’s best friend. If I didn’t call him off, whoever you are, our German Shepherd would have made mincemeat out of you.”
“Fucking hound,” the robber griped. “I should have put a second slug in Rin Tin Tin while I had the chance.”
“Dylan,” my father said. “Go in the kitchen and bring me the phone.”
“Okay.” When I returned, I handed it to him.
“Don’t even think about standing up,” my dad warned the crook, as he dialed 911. “You’re going to sit right there on the floor in front of me until the police get here.
