The more I talked to Dookie Carson, the more I could see that he was a pretty simple guy. He told me about attending high school and ending up in special education classes before dropping out. His school counselor told his mother he had learning disabilities, but his mother told the woman her son was just fine and didn’t need any special treatment. It was easy to see the guy had been dealt a shit hand in life.

It was also no surprise that the criminal element walking amongst us took advantage of people like Dookie who weren’t astute enough to see they were heading down the wrong path before they realized they were in over their heads.

I wasn’t some bleeding-heart liberal who set out to change the world every morning when I woke up, but I could see that for a guy like Dookie, a little extra effort on his mother’s, teachers’, or guidance counselor’s part could have made a world of difference for his future.

We drove back to his mother’s trailer outside Mesquite where I saw Monty’s truck parked down the short street. My phone had been buzzing while I drove, so I picked it up while Dookie was getting the groceries out of the back seat. There were a few text messages.
