"Girrrrl, I cannot believe yo cousin Terrell was buggin' like that!" Denise jiggled her lock-filled head, prancing around the tiny apartment she shared with a roommate who worked three jobs and was barely home. She stole another bottle of wine from the fridge. She and Ashley had already killed half of the Pinot Grigio, but it was only half-full when they started drinking it.
Not missing a beat, Ashley offered a smooth neck roll in response. "Yea, sis. I'm like, bruh, you tryna come fa me? Yo broke, baby mama havin' ass?" Getting more comfortable, she crossed her legs while seated on the floor.
After arriving nearly an hour ago, Ashley changed out of her dress attire and slipped into a pair of joggers and a crop top from Denise's closet. She was a size larger than Denise and a few inches shorter, so it wasn't the best fit, but it would do.
"Puh! He had the nerve to call you spoiled. Like he be up here grindin'." Denise plopped onto the sofa facing Ashley with eyes of disbelief. "And he got a whole damn family."
Even though they didn't have a lot of furniture, Denise's space was still nice. In Ashley's opinion, it gave chill, cute vibes in a vintage sort of way. The sofa was a pull-out belonging to the MIA roommate, Cat, and served as her bed at night while Denise copped the intimate space in the back. It was more of a cubbyhole than a room with a large maroon blanket nailed to the opening instead of an actual door. Denise did her best to make it inviting, crowding the walls with shelves of varying items like candles and pictures of loved ones. Jars of the homemade hair products she hustled were sprinkled throughout as well. There was also a sizable hand-painted portrait of a marijuana plant overlooking the pallet she slept on.
Denise and Cat had had a third roommate, Jeff. But Jeff had just moved out, and they were looking for a replacement. Ashley had no idea where Jeff had been sleeping. Denise swore up and down he wasn't sharing her room, but Ashley didn't believe her. The only other space would have been the kitchen. Even the bathroom was barely a full bath and resembled more of a closet. But since Cat spent ample time with her boyfriend in Brooklyn, there was a slight possibility Jeff had alternated between the sofa and the floor when he was home between jobs.
Ashley's eyes shifted out of habit in a low-key search for mice. Though she had never spotted any, she couldnât seem to untrain herself from looking anyway. She grazed over the treasure-chest-designed wooden table with drawers that sat smack dab in the middle of the floor and then to the large painting of a brown-skinned woman, half-naked with long locks, sprawled on the wall over the sofa. The woman's locks swirled in the air while a black bodysuit swallowed whole her bulging butt cheeks. Ashley secretly thought Denise had the portrait painted of herself, but never took the time to ask.
