Chapter 7
Ronan wasted no time getting into the passenger side of Mollyâs car. Felix briefly thought about driving the truck, but didnât relish the idea of rocketing pell-mell into the sea. Molly pulled away once Felix was situated in the back. Ronan sat silently rocking in his seat in front of Felix. Not knowing anything else to do, Felix placed a comforting hand on Ronanâs shoulder. It was instantly shaken off. Felixâs face flushed as he withdrew his hand and sat back cradling it as if it were scalded.
âHow badââ Ronan began speaking with a strangled tone before clearing his throat and trying again. âHow bad is he?â
Molly placed her free hand on his knee.
Oh, sheâs allowed, Felix thought before becoming disgusted with himself. His jealousy knew no bounds of propriety or decorum.
âWe donât know, love. Postman found him in the yard. Heâs alive. Heâs breathing. Thatâs all I know. I heard the dispatch and came looking for you lot.â
âHow long did it take to find us?â
Molly paused before answering. âBest part of an hour.â
âGod damn it!â Ronan punched the dashboard, crying out in physical pain.
Ronan turned to hold his hand toward Felix who had already leaned forward to assess the damage. He looked into Ronanâs glistening eyes as he gingerly unwrapped his hand. Once Felix saw blood on the inner layers of bandages, he wrapped the hand back up quickly. âYouâve burst a stitch or two. Weâll get you fixed up at the hospital.â
The thirty-minute drive to the hospital was tense and silent. Felix kept his eyes shut for as much of the trip as possible. Western Irish roads were terrifying to him at the best of times, but at the speeds Garda Redmond drove them, keeping his eyes and his mouth firmly closed was best in this situation.
Ronan was already opening his door before the car had fully stopped. Felix made to open his, but Molly stopped him. âMaybe not at the moment, love. Iâll be back out presently. You need the radio?â
Felix declined music, settling down to relax and process the situation. He awoke with a start some time later when Molly opened his door. He accepted her offer to ride up front with her.
âIs Lorcan going to be okay?â he asked.
âI think so,â Molly said. âHeâs right lucky the postman came when he did.â
The car glided out of the hospitalâs A&E parking area at a much slower pace than theyâd pulled into it. âAre we going to go get Ronanâs truck?â
Molly shook her head. âAnother Guard already took care of that.â
âThen where are we going?â
âThatâs up to you,â Molly said.
âIs my time up already?â
âNot exactly, but it can be.â
Although his first thought was asking Molly to get him the hell out of here, he said instead, âWhat are my options?â
âThings are much more complicated than just punishment for petty crimes and misdemeanors now. How much has Lorcan been helping you around the farm?â
âAbout fifty-fifty.â
Molly raised an eyebrow.
âOkay, like, sixty-three to forty-eight or whatever. Iâm not good at math.
