Not a sign of Sloan’s presence was left an hour later when a cab pulled up outside the house. As Rush stepped out, I approached the driver.

“How much do we owe you?” I asked.

“Simo, I can pay my own cab fare.”

I caught Rush to my side and kissed him hard. “Hush. With me here, why should you?”

I took care of the fare and kissed him again as the cab driver left. “I missed you.”

“Me too.” He took my face into his hands and smiled. “I wasn't sure when I would see you again.”

I scanned his face, his neck and his arms. No fresh bruises. He looked damn good. I might have triggered my father the way I'd threatened him. He might now suspect me of wanting his husband, but it was worth it to end his abuse of Rush.

“Has he hurt you?”

He shook his head, but I wasn’t sure if I should believe him. “He hasn't laid a finger on me. Not since you stood up for me, but we should be careful in the future about meeting.”

“I only wish I'd done it sooner. You should have told me he put hands on you.”

“You know I've been trying to avoid having a confrontation between you both.”

“It's inevitable, babe.” I led him inside the house and to the kitchen. “Want something to drink?”

“Just some water, but we should go soon. Renato's away for the weekend. I'm sure he’s having those servants report to him how long I go out, though. That, and his new little toy, Julien.” He rolled his eyes. “Before he left, he assigned me a bodyguard, but I ditched him and my car at the mall.”

“Do you think he's put a tracker on you?”

“I don't think so. In my devices, yes, which is why I left my phone in the car.”

“Smart boy.”

He grimaced and took the bottle of water from me. “Then why am I in this mess?”

“Because I was too in my feelings to do something about it when it would have been easier to act, but I'm this close, Rush. Can you put up with it a little longer? If not, I'll take you with me right now and say fuck everything else.”

He shook his head. “I know you, Simo. You love me and I believe that. But you also want to own your father’s world. You crave power. In some ways, you are like him.”

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

I scowled. I hadn't minded when Sloan made the comment, but from Rush, it sounded wrong after everything Pop did to him.

“I'm nothing like him.”

Rush chuckled. “Don't frown. I don't mean that it's a bad thing. No one is truly fully evil, though your father comes close. He has work ethics similarly to yours. He is ambitious and likes to control things. You do too.”

“Are you saying I try to control you?”

“Sometimes. But I like when you do it.” Rush came up to me and wrapped his arms around my neck, leaning his slender body into mine.
