Lady Catherine de Bourgh was most anxious to receive the Darcys at Rosings, in spite of her less than cordial invitation to Mrs. Darcy. She was sure that if Darcy’s wife understood her place, she would be grateful for the opportunity to visit Rosings Park. Darcy had not prepared his aunt for his wife’s absence, hoping till the very end that she would agree to accompany him.

Sitting in her elegant chair, assuming a regal stance as if perched upon a throne, her Ladyship was confounded when her nephews entered the drawing room alone. “Darcy, what is the meaning of this? Where is your wife?”

“I beg your pardon, Madam. Mrs. Darcy did not accompany me,” he declared.

“How dare she dismiss any invitation that I deign to extend to her! Does she not recognise the honour that I have bestowed?

“Why, she did not have the decency to express her regrets—rather she simply chose to dismiss my invitation out of hand with no consideration of propriety and social obligation? This is not to be borne.”

“Mrs. Darcy sends her regrets, Lady Catherine, and she sends you this letter, which I have been charged to present to you personally.”

He handed his aunt the note. She hastily tore open the seal and perused its contents.
