Seated in the stiff, vinyl-covered chair at his fatherâs bedside, Miles was jarred from his nap by the ringing of his phone. He searched around, finding it in a crevice between his thigh and the armrest. Swiping the screen, he answered. âHello?â
âHi, Miles. Itâs Cambria.â
He swallowed. âHey there.â He hadnât expected to hear from her, at least not so soon. It had only been a few hours since heâd left her house. âWhatâs up?â
âI told you earlier Iâd check in on your dad today, remember?â She paused. âHow is he? Any news?â
He felt his chest contract. There she goes, being sweet and caring again. Has she forgotten what weâre supposed to be doing? âHe had a mild heart attack, and heâll need to stay here at least a couple of days to recuperate before they send him home.â He glanced over at his father, who was lying in bed watching In the Heat of the Night. âHeâs awake now, watching TV.â
âThatâs good. Sounds like heâs out of the woods.â
âHe is, as long as he follows the doctorâs orders and keeps his stress levels down.â
âTell that to your mother,â Caleb groused from his perch in bed. His sour expression and folded arms made him look like a child in the throes of a tantrum, but Miles had better sense than to tell him that.
âI heard him,â she said. âAt least heâs up and talking, right?â
âYeah.â Miles chuckled. âLetâs hope his mood improves right along with his condition.â
âListen, I know youâve got a lot going on right now, but can I ask you a favor?â
His brow hitched. Was she about to ask him something practical? Or something cheeky? âWhat is it?â
âI got a financial statement from my accountant today. I canât tell what the problem is, exactly, but somethingâs off.â She paused. âPlease donât feel like you have to do it this minute, but if you get some free time, would you mind looking over it?â
He ran a hand over his head. âCanât promise itâll be anytime soon, but Iâll take a look. Iâll text you my email.â He took a few seconds to send off the text.
âThanks, I appreciate it.â She paused. âI know you have a lot going on, and I donât want to hold you. But it was nice hearing your voice, and Iâm glad your dad is improving.â
âI really appreciate you being so caring.â He drew a deep breath, feeling the stress of his family situation sitting on his shoulders. How can I tell her that the more caring she is, the more time I wanna spend making love to her? He touched his temple, where the beginnings of a tension headache were settling in.
âYou still there?â she asked.
âYes. Sorry.â He chuckled. âMy thoughts got away from me for a moment.â
âI think I can guess the general direction your mind went. I may or may not be thinking about last night, too.â She giggled. When she spoke again, her words were soft, just above a whisper. âGo take care of your dad, Miles.
