Kathleen ordered a hot bath once Reed was gone. She regretted that she hadn't been able to convince him to stay with her. They could have had a fine time, but she made up her mind to enjoy every minute of her stay in the hotel just the same. The maid brought the tub in to her room and filled it with hot water, and Kathleen couldn't wait to luxuriate in it. It seemed an eternity since she'd last had the chance to pamper herself. She stripped off her dreaded widow's weeds and climbed into the tub to soak in its welcoming warmth.
Kathleen remained lazing in the tub until the water cooled, then washed and toweled herself off. That done, she stood before the full-length mirror to look at her body. She turned sideways, then studied herself from the front and back. Her breasts were high and firm, her hips nicely rounded. She thought she looked quite attractive, and her resentment over the society-dictated year of mourning deepened. Wearing the heavy black widow's weeds was like being buried alive. She was young and pretty, and she wanted to enjoy her life.
Muttering to herself, Kathleen climbed into the solitary bed. The sheets felt cool against her bare flesh. She regretted again that Reed was not there to help warm the sheets up. She certainly would have enjoyed making love to him. A smile curved her lips as she imagined him lying next to her. It would have been wonderful.
She sighed wistfully, still clinging to the hope that one day soon he would really be hers and come to her of his own free will. She wondered how much longer it would take. She wasn't a patient woman.
As she was considering how long she would wait for Reed, she remembered her promise to Lyle that she would meet him tonight. A throaty, wicked chuckle escaped her at the thought of him waiting endlessly for her to come to him. She wondered how long he would wait for her. She wondered, too, how angry he would be when he discovered she wasn't coming. The thought that she could control Lyle this way pleased her. It made her feel powerful. It would be amusing when she finally saw him again tomorrow.
But until then, she was just going to enjoy the softness of her lonely bed and dream of what the future might hold for her with the man she'd been dreaming of for so long-Reed.
