CHAPTER 19

When Vivian received the text from Allie advising her to wear hiking boots or at least tennis shoes, she suddenly wondered just what she agreed to today. A quick Google search of Multnomah Falls resulted in some picturesque photos of a majestic cascade of water. Vivian was impressed. Seeing something so breathtaking in person would make for an exceptional experience, however, when she scrolled down to read there was a mile-long walking trail to the top, she paused. She can’t be serious, Vivian thought. There were many things Vivian enjoyed tremendously, but climbing over five hundred feet to the top of a waterfall was not necessarily on the list. What is it with these Portland people? The search did reveal a very nice lodge was nestled at the base of the falls. Vivian made a mental note to spend as much time as possible sipping something hot there while Allie and her friends climbed Mount Everest. Still, she did wear her barely used running shoes and was waiting in the lobby of her high-rise apartment complex when she saw an SUV pull up in front.

“Ready?” Allie called as she slipped out of the back-passenger door. Vivian nodded, suddenly nervous. I can’t believe I agreed to this, she thought and wondered if it was too late to back out. Then, Allie was there and giving her a quick peck on the lips. Clearly sensing Vivian's hesitation, she leaned into Vivian's ear. “You sure you're okay with this?” she said, and Vivian was in fact not sure, but seeing Allie gave her courage to try something new. She makes me feel bold. The realization surprised her. After years of being with someone who did precisely the opposite, the sensation was a welcome change.

“I can do this,” she replied to Allie's question, and the woman gave her a smile.

“Thank you,” she said, taking Vivian’s hand and leading her to the vehicle. Vivian let out a deep breath and went with it. Seeing Rey’s smiling face as they approached helped.

“Hi there,” she said as she stepped out of the car to make room for Vivian. “I’m so glad you are coming with us. It will be fun.”

Vivian laughed. “Well, we’ll see,” she said. “I’m not sure I’m in shape to do much mountain climbing.”

Rey chuckled. “I don't know that too many of us are, so don't be worried. This was Marty's pick,” she said. Vivian saw her glance at the sandy-haired woman who had gallantly moved to sit in the small jump seat in the back of the car. Marty was all smiles.

“We can’t live thirty-minutes from a natural wonder and not visit it once in a while,” she explained. “People come from all over the world to see these falls.” Vivian watched Rey roll her eyes playfully.

“So you've mentioned,” Rey retorted. “About a dozen times.” Vivian was warmed by the friendly banter and followed Allie into the car to slide onto the seat beside her. Their knees brushed, and Vivian immediately felt an erotic tingle from the touch.
