“Brady!” the loud banging continued.

“What?”

“We got a problem...”

I sit up in bed. “What’s going on?”

“Fuck if I know.” He sits up in bed. “Why is the bed wet?”

I reach over to where his hand is. “I don’t know? Maybe because your room is hot? Night sweats? Sex sweats? Rough sex sweats?”

The pounding starts again. “Brady!”

“I’m coming!” He puts his feet on the floor and jerks on his jeans and crosses the room and swings open the door. “What the fuck, dude?”

“What the fuck? Some chick is floating in the lake.”

“What do you mean, floating?”

“Face down, man.”

I watch them take off down the hallway. I push myself off the mattress, snatching my hand back when I feel the dampness from where my body was. My heartbeat hitches in my throat. “Camille...” I whisper in my palm. I grab my damp clothes and throw my hair in a ponytail.

I race down the hall. As soon as I make it to the kitchen, I can hear the commotion outside. I stop, splash water over my face, trying to get a grip on the reality of what is happening.

I watch the chaotic scene outside from the kitchen window. The people who slept in tents last night emerging and freaking out. The people who passed out where they couldn’t take any more steps are standing up scratching their heads. Small groups of people gathered and started walking down to the bank and dock. All gawking, not knowing what to do.

“Merrit?” I jump and fall back against the counter. I turn to see Camille standing there in confusion.

My hand covers my chest in relief. “Camille.” I cross the kitchen and grab her in my arms.

“What’s going on? And why are your clothes wet?” She pushes me away, our eyes locking. Her blunt questions catch me off guard. “Merrit?” she backs away from me. “Why are your clothes wet?”

“I spilled a glass of water on myself before bed,” I recover as my heart races. “I’m glad you’re okay.”

“Why? What’s going on?” Her eyes fill with tears.

I take a step toward her. “Someone was beating on Brady’s door...” I stop and hold on to the counter. “Someone drowned.”

Her face screws up as she stares at me. “Who?”

I look down. “I don’t know.”

“What did you do?” she whispers.

My head snaps up. “I didn’t do anything.” I defend wide-eyed. “Why would you ask me that? I’m just as confused.”

Brady crashes through the door and picks up the phone, “Fuck... that girl, Julie that you know is dead.” We both look at Brady as he dials 911, then at each other. “Yeah, I need to report a drowning.”

We stare at each other as Brady tells 911 the details and the address.

It wasn’t but a minute before Dave runs into the house. “I don’t know when she got out of bed. Do you remember?” He looks at Camille.

She shakes her head. “I was so drunk. I don’t remember most of the night.” Her voice borderline panicked. “I heard her whispering to someone then she got up and left the room.
