WE PULL INTO THE PARKING lot. The conjecture that has been unfolding for the last two hours falls away into silence when we see Mr. Draplin talking with Jane and Gil. I squint, trying to evaluate their facial expressions.
Leo pulls up to the curb, not bothering with a parking spot. I wait before I open the door, hoping one of my friends will say something that will ease the knot forming in my stomach, but they are as quiet as I am.
Uncle Gil opens my door. “Hi kids.” His voice is solemn, and I know something is wrong. Terribly, terribly wrong. I step out and walk forward to where Aunt Jane is standing. A few seconds later, the car is empty.
Mr. Draplin addresses us, “Dean Longley is waiting for us in her office.”
My eyes dart to Julia, her expression revealing that she’s just as confused as I am. A major theory that had developed on the car ride home is that Miyagi’s parents had somehow discovered that he left campus. Miyagi, though, is certain they wouldn’t care.
Watching everyone, I know, this is something else. Something so much worse. Something none of us could have ever speculated.
“My parents knew where we were going,” Leo offers as we walk toward the primary building.
Mr. Draplin pauses for only a moment. “You’re not in trouble, son.”
Son? Something is seriously wrong.
“Then what’s going on?” Leo asks as we enter through the oversized doors.
“We’ll talk about it with the dean.”
We enter The Frog’s large and sparsely decorated office. She’s sitting behind her large desk, and across from her, sits a police officer. When we enter, the officer stands, exchanges some words that makes no sense to us, and then exits.
“Please, come in.” She motions to the chairs across from her, but there are not enough. I notice her eyes are red. Julia and I take a seat, and everyone else stands behind us. I feel a single hand on each of my shoulders from my aunt and uncle.
“I’m glad you all made it back here safely,” she adds.
“My parents knew—” Leo starts.
“Mr. Blake, this meeting has nothing to do with your adventure today,” The Frog interjects.
“Then what?” Leo asks.
“Richard, your parents are on their way.” It feels weird to hear The Frog refer to Miyagi by his real name. “They’ve asked me to speak with you since they won’t be able to be here until this evening at the soonest.”
Miyagi is shaking his head. “What? Why are my parents coming?”
I notice Julia shaking her head next to me. “No, we’re not doing this. No. No.”
“Doing what?” Miyagi whispers.
Mr. Draplin moves in next to Miyagi, placing an arm around his shoulder. I wonder what Julia has figured out that the rest of us haven’t.
The Frog continues, “We discussed it, and we feel having your friends here with you might help.”
“Help what?” Miyagi asks, agitated.
The husky woman moves around her desk, positioning herself directly in front of Miyagi. “I’m sorry to tell you, but something terrible has happened.”
We already know this much.
