* * * *

Hawthorne got to his feet and left Wallace to his phone call. He wanted to listen in, but he already knew that Wallace’s father had been to the facility today—and yesterday and the day before that. He’d been coming every day since he and Hawthorne had talked, and it didn’t sound like he was giving up.

Kennedy and the other trainers had kept Hawthorne up to date, so he knew what was happening. Jones had pitched a fit when he hadn’t found Wallace the day after talking to Hawthorne. He’d threatened to call the cops, then the council enforcers. From what Kennedy had said, he’d told Jones to go ahead and do just that. He’d also pointed out that Wallace was an adult and that if he didn’t want to see his father, no one would force him, not even the enforcers. That much was true, but Hawthorne wouldn’t put it past Jones to find another way to get to his son.

From what Wallace had said, he was close to his brother. His father might use him and try to get Wallace to come out through Jimmy. Wallace wouldn’t hesitate talking to his brother—if Jimmy called and asked him where he was, maybe told him he was worried, Wallace would reassure him and agree to see him.

That was what he always did. He didn’t want people to worry about him, probably because he wasn’t used to having people who did. His parents certainly didn’t. Hawthorne had thought it was just Wallace’s father, but now he knew Wallace’s mother was implicated too. That meant Wallace had grown up with only his brother on his side, and it didn’t feel fair. He should have plenty of people, but especially his parents. Instead, he was hiding in Hawthorne’s guestroom.

Hawthorne reached the bathroom and locked himself inside. He opened the cabinet and stared at the hidden spray bottle behind the deodorant and other toiletries. He already knew it was empty. He’d used the last of it last night, which was why he’d made a point of staying as far away from Wallace as possible today. He couldn’t continue doing so for much longer. Wallace would realize something was wrong, and he’d push to know what that something was. That would bring him closer, which was the last thing Hawthorne needed.

What he needed was for Kennedy to bring him another bottle, but Kennedy was being cagey, and Hawthorne knew it meant he was planning something.

So he called him.

“What?” Kennedy answered, huffing like he was annoyed.

He probably was, but Hawthorne didn’t care. “Wallace is on the phone with Kerwin. Jones was at the facility today?”

Kennedy groaned. “Yeah, he was, and I swear that if I have to talk to him one more time, I’m going to kick his ass.”

Hawthorne smiled. He liked that he wasn’t the only one who felt that way about Wallace’s father. It had helped him realize that he wasn’t doing this just because Wallace was his mate. Everyone wanted to kick Jones’s ass, so it wasn’t just Hawthorne being overprotective.
