Friday, October 3rd

Card arrived today from Christina von Shouse to remind about upcoming dinner on Wednesday the 13th. Looks very swish: “pour mémoire, ” etc., on a stiff white card with details (time, place) in calligraphic hand. I immediately wonder what to wear—as I always do. How awful to be saddled with such vanity, and this terrible love of clothes.

Jack’s in Seattle again on Northtech business. I will go over my notes on Joanna this weekend and plan questions to Rosalind. She will be a tough nut to crack: is there any feeling there? I’m not sure, although I sense her devotion to David and to Wakefield to be deep, almost obsessive in its intensity. I wonder about its origin. It occurs to me that she will indeed be the one to inherit the house. What does that mean? I’ll find out when I ask her just that question—about Wakefield, that is.

The appointment with Rosalind is set for next Tuesday, at her apartment. Six o’clock: for some reason her secretary (the aforementioned Mr. Crowell) felt compelled to add: “And I should tell you that Ms. Bennett is never late.”
