Chapter Ten

Pemberley and Partings

Elizabeth warmed the small glass of brandy between her two hands. The room was finally beginning to cool as the sunset started to appear on the horizon. Darcy drew back the net curtains so that they could see it in its unfiltered glory in the field opposite the station.

“The last time I saw a sunset like that was at home.” Darcy remarked.

“Pemberley. I was thinking about it only the other day.” She replied.

“You were?”

“Yes, I was looking for a scarf for my hair when I came across the cardigan I wore the day I first saw it. I picked it up and found a book underneath it with a chain of daisies pressed inside.”

“Was it ‘Wilderness Walks of Derbyshire’ by any chance?” He asked.

“The very one, you had picked the daisies for me do you remember?”

“While we sat down by the lake, the meadowlarks were singing.”

“And I made a chain from them and pressed them in the book that night.”

“I saw the book in Bakewell and thought only of you. I thought that you had such a love of walking and you knew Hertfordshire so well, that when you came to live in Derbyshire you could find a special place to walk there too.”

“We did. Up to the top of the Old Nook.”

“You can see all across Pemberley from up there.” He smiled. “But my eyes only saw you.”

He teased one of Elizabeth’s hands away from her glass.

“I can still remember hesitating that morning. When my aunt suggested we visit the place I wasn’t sure.” Elizabeth explained.

“You thought that you would not be welcome?”

“Well, I could not have blamed you. My uncle even phoned ahead to see if the family were at home, otherwise, I would not have gone.”

“But when you heard that we were all away…”

“I leapt at the chance of seeing what place had created two such differing men.”

“My mother and father were away at Rosings Park. My aunt was eager for them to meet Mrs Collins.” Darcy explained.

“A fine woman if ever there was one.” Elizabeth remarked.

“Indeed. Georgiana and I were away in London, as you know. But I did not cherish a long car journey with any of Bingley’s relatives. So, I came home a day early instead and blamed it on the estate. Little did I know that you would be there wandering across the lawn, away from the tour party.”

“We were told to explore the grounds ourselves. Mrs Reynolds herself recommended the view from there. Then suddenly there you were.”

“I think you loved me that day.” Darcy replied.

“I did, but I felt so conflicted by the idea of it.”

“Because of my interference between Bingley and Jane?” He asked.

“Yes.”

Darcy looked out of the window as the sky turned into shades of orange and gold.

“I must confess that it played on my mind a great deal. I think that jealousy played a hand in my actions. His affection for Jane he paraded freely for all to see. Whilst I was forced by my own conceit to keep my feelings secret.
