Dante was barely able to avoid the onslaught of attacks by frantically bobbing and weaving. William was contorting his arms into spears and shooting them out in a merciless barrage while wearing a bland expression that had been plastered on his face since his restoration. Dante could tell he was much more than the average Void – he was more intelligent, his combat had more than a hint of strategy, and he had a lot more energy too.
Because he was dodging the slew of attacks aimed at his head Dante failed to notice the underground assault until he felt the rumbling beneath his feet. He jumped back and four or five more spears shot out where he had been standing. They twisted and scythed through the air before returning back through the hole they made. Dante looked back at William, whose arms were retracting into him.
If he was guessing correctly, William did that last attack by stretching out his feet and snaking them under and through the ground. He didn’t move to conceal the fact that he was laying a trap. William wasn’t an idiot, though, and realized that Dante figured it out. He took a step forward.
“You’re trying awfully hard for someone who doesn’t know why he’s attacking,” Dante said.
“Your observations are worthless, but the name you chose – Void – is very fitting. Since becoming one, I don’t feel anything at all.”
“I don’t buy that,” Dante said, gathering energy into his palm. Winding back, he gripped it like a ball and it hurled it at William. In defense he contorted his arm into a bear-like claw and blocked the energy, which dissipated into a puff of smoke. He was undamaged by it.
Still, that attack was probably Dante’s best bet at getting a solid hit in. His normal shots, the ones when he punched the energy out in all directions, were useful as a distraction but they didn’t pack too much of a wallop. Since the ball took longer to create, the energy it was comprised of was denser, and thus more focused, more powerful. If he wanted to get a solid hit on William, he’d want to create a distraction with punches and let one big ball loose.
Dante began to execute his plan, letting out several jabs as an opening while sliding across the floor. William had planted his feet again and stood unflinching as the first wave came before him. The spears, no, they were more like tentacles, came out of the ground in front of him once again and knocked away the spheres of energy. Damn, that’s a good defense, Dante thought.
Still, there must be a limit to how many he could create. Dante pulled back and moved his arms out as fast as he could. Faster. Faster. The shots rang out from the blur that were his arms. They contacted the tentacles that whipped and whirled knocking the balls out, which created puffs of smoke upon contact. Soon a cloud gathered, and Dante readied the next stage of his plan.
