I open the door for Harloe, and she steps inside. She texted about half an hour ago, barely giving me time to get home from the clubhouse.

“You know, these impromptu meetings are getting old.”

“Impromptu?”

I run a hand through my hair. “Yeah. You can’t just show up whenever the hell you feel like it.”

She crosses her arms over her chest. “Actually, I can. I’m the one who makes the damn rules. Understood?”

My eyes narrow. “How could I forget? I’m just your fucking pawn in all this.”

She shakes her head. “That’s not true!”

“Bullshit, Harloe! You don’t give a damn about me! All you want is to pin this whole trafficking business on innocent men!”

“There is nothing innocent about those men!”

“And there it is. You want me to trust you, but you don’t trust me enough to tell me the real reason you’re doing this.”

“I don’t have to listen to this.”

Harloe snatches the door open, and I slam it shut, my arms caging her in. I’ve been on edge all day, ever since running into Marnie. I haven’t been able to shut her out of my mind, and I hate myself for replaying memories in my head. Memories I wish I could forget.

“You brought me into this shit show, and you’re fucking lying to me.”

She spins around, resting against my door. Her chest heaves with every breath. Her nostrils flare in defiance. I lower one hand to her neck, caressing her soft skin a moment before tightening my grip. She gasps, her lips parting.

Every kiss we’ve shared has been for show.

A game of pretend.

Not this one.

“No,” she says when my lips are only a breath away. “We can’t do this. We’re not doing this.”

“Okay.”

I reply but stay where I am, my hand still at her neck. My mouth at hers. My cock is hard as stone, and I’m exercising more restraint than I knew I possessed.

“Jaden,” she whispers. “Fuck.”

My name. That word. It’s her admission of defeat. Her acceptance that this is happening.

And I won’t let her regret it.
