Chapter 5

Thomas had carried the rocking chair that night on his back all the way back to the apartments above the bank where the Clarke family lived, and then set in his bedroom, where Mr. Cohen… er… Sam had been lain when they’d arrived with him injured. Victoria’s cousin then spent the night in the barracks at the jailhouse instead of in the family home, since his bed was occupied.

Victoria and her family welcomed Ms. Cohen into their home cheerfully. They had their meals at the table and then Ms. Cohen spent all of her time rocking in the chair in the room where Sam lay, having been asleep for more than a day since his injury. The doctor had said that it wasn’t abnormal for a man to sleep for a long time after losing so much blood, and to expect a bit of fever. The elder Ms. Cohen spent all of her time changing the cool cloth on her son’s head, knitting, and rocking in her chair while humming. The few times that Victoria came into the room while Ms. Cohen hummed, she felt comforted by the sound, and could imagine that Sam had to feel comforted as well.

That evening, when she was finished with her regular work in the bakery, Ms. Maple set the sack on the counter and frowned. “If Sam isn’t here to take these loaves to the orphans, how will they get their daily bread?”

“I’ll take it,” Victoria offered immediately. “Thomas will escort me. We delivered the loaves last night and will continue to do so until Sam is back on his feet and ready to take on his duties.”

Ms. Maple lifted a brow. “Did you just call him something other than Mr. Cohen?”

Victoria’s eyes went wide and her cheeks flushed. “His… His mother insisted. I feel wrong doing so without his knowing, but she insisted that we not call him Mr. Cohen.”

A laugh escaped Ms. Maple and she nearly doubled over as she continued. “I was only joking. No need to take it so seriously. I’m certain Sam will not mind you calling him by his Christian name.”

The bell over the door rang and Thomas walked into the bakery, his face somber. “Hello, ladies.”

“Would you mind escorting me over to the Miner’s Row again? We should deliver these loaves and pastries in Sam’s stead, don’t you think?”

He nodded slowly, his somber expression unchanged. “Yes, but you’ll need to add two loaves to the batch. I just came back with the sheriff from delivering bad news to two families today.”

Victoria’s heart squeezed in her chest and she thought she might cry for the pour souls. “That’s so sad.”

“I’ll add them to the sack,” Mary said, the sorrow on her face also evident.

Before Thomas had come in with the sad news, Victoria had been looking forward to seeing the mothers and their small children, but now she realized the need for what Sam had been doing the whole time. It wasn’t something fun or even something that was just charitable.
