Lexie
Weâd been in one of those big round booths with the velvet cushions. The kind that, back in the day, had a curtain that the server would pull across the opening, giving the mobsters and showgirls total privacy. We didnât have that level of privacy the night we got married, but we were way into the night and way, way into each other.
âTake off your panties,â heâd whispered. âAnd give them to me.â
âHere?â Iâd squeaked and heâd nodded, that blond hair falling over his eyes and I wasnât proud of it, but I would have done just about anything he told me at that point. I shimmied out of my panties, handed them to him, and he tucked them into his pocket. âCome closer,â heâd whispered, and of course I had. And heâd put his hands between my legs, making a sound when he found me smooth and soft and so, so wet for him.
I came pretty fast and he handed me back my underwear with a wink.
âIâve never done that,â heâd said. âIn a crowded restaurant.â
âWell, youâve got real natural talent,â Iâd said like it was something I did all the time and weâd laughed and ordered champagne cocktails.
Telling him about it was what Henny would call a mistake. It had taken me months to pour enough water on those memories of my night with Ethan that I didnât want to relive it anymore. And now I was laying them out like a feast for both of us.
Flirting. This was terrible flirting and I should be ashamed of myself.
Except I was all hot under my clothes and my blood was pounding between my legs and I couldnât get his voice out of my head or the memory of his fingers on my thigh. This was why I wasnât supposed to stay. This exact reason. Because it had been a drunken one-night stand and I wanted to make it more.
Give me a crumb and I would want a cake.
âLexie!â he cried and caught up with me on the snowy sidewalk outside the diner. He stepped in close like he wanted more details but that would be such a bad idea. So I stepped back and pointed to the square. âWhatâs going on here?â
There were booths set up and a little stage. All the shops and restaurants around the square were hopping.
âItâs the Christmas Jamboree. At about five each night Santa sits here and kids can get pictures and artists set up tables and sell their stuff. Thereâs food and a bar. Games.â
âSounds magical,â I said.
âIt is, really. Would you like to see it?â
âI work at the desk until seven.â
âItâs open until ten. Iâd love to take you, Lexie. You can consider it researchââ
I shook my head. âWeâre already blurring the lines. This is supposed to be research lunch and youâre flirting with me.â
âWell, youâre flirting right back, Lexie.â
I rolled my eyes at him. âI know. And itâs going to stop.â
âWhy, though?â he asked, and I turned and walked away. In my new boots, my feet didnât slide on the ice and I could still feel my pinky toes.
