Barney Goodwin sat at his workbench in his store, reloading powder, and projectiles into spent brass for a customer. Guns were his passion and had been ever since he received his first twenty-two rifle on his seventh birthday. He was good with people and provided inexpensive firearms supplies for the community. The services he provided included ammunition reloading, weapon maintenance and a three-lane firing range for handguns and rifles. Being the go-to guy in Harperâs Glen for any firearms-related questions or issues, he also sold any hunting equipment, licenses and paraphernalia needed during any of the year-round hunting and fishing seasons. Most of the time, he dealt with shotguns, hunting rifles and some handguns, but for a few discerning customers, he could procure more exotic weaponry.
Heâd owned and operated his own store in Harperâs Glen for fifteen years and had been an under the counter dealer of illegal weapons for ten. Most of the people he dealt with were enthusiasts, like himself, who merely wanted to possess a fully automatic rifle or four. Some of his deals included âprepperâ nut cases living in Montana, Idaho, or some other backwoods state, who thought that the government was out to get them and decided to build an arsenal to defend their private bunkers. He rarely dealt with people he didnât know, and most of his transactions were conducted through a third party. That way, there was less of a trail leading back to him if the authorities caught on. He never transacted any deals over the Internet. The World Wide Web scared the bejesus out of him. In his opinion, the more you did online, the better the government was able to track what you were doing, and for an arms dealer, that was not a good thing.
During his years in business, heâd been lucky enough to avoid popping up on the radar of John Q. Law. His regular business and his side income had provided him and his wife, Cathy, with a comfortable lifestyle. It allowed him, in fact, to dote on his wife to his heartâs desire. He never refused her any request. When she wanted to build an addition to the back of their house for a sewing room, he gladly wrote out the checks and the extension was built. When she decided she wanted to take college courses and then later photography and cooking lessons, once again he provided. He and Cathy had been high school sweethearts. Barney loved her with all his heart and believed she truly was the better half of his soul. The only thing he ever insisted upon was the location of their home and his business. He chose to live in Harperâs Glen because it was a small, out of the way town, near major highways, but quiet and scenic and an unlikely place to look for a merchant of illicit weaponry. An added benefit to the locale was the trees and the clean mountain air, which were good for his wife, who had developed respiratory problems of late.
