CHAPTER NINE
HOFFA AND THE GOVERNMENT
Rumors that Hoffa, Marcello, and Trafficante had discussions about murdering President Kennedy surfaced, but no firm evidence supported the accusation. The innuendo that the three were in contact with the Dallas nightclub owner Jack Ruby who shot and killed Lee Harvey Oswald was startling. Members of the Warren Commission investigating the Kennedy assassination had some knowledge of the connection but curiously decided not to go further with it. A year before Hoffa disappeared, the U.S. Senate held closed-door hearings on the Mob’s involvement in both the plot to assassinate Fidel Castro by poison and the Mob’s involvement in the Bay of Pigs invasion. Chairing the Senate Select Committee was Senator Frank Church of Idaho. The committee heard testimony and collected evidence about the Mob ties to the April 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion and to a suspected Mob-CIA scheme to murder Fidel Castro. At the very beginning of the 1975 hearings, the CIA revealed to the Church Committee the Mob’s involvement and assistance in the Bay of Pigs invasion and the existence of the CIA-Mob plot to kill Castro, called “Operation Mongoose.” A few days before notorious mobster Sam “Momo” Giancana was scheduled to testify before the Church Committee, he was gunned down. With Giancana dead, the committee summoned Giancana’s lieutenant, Johnny Roselli, to testify under oath behind closed doors. A few months later Roselli met the same fate as his former boss when police discovered his body stuffed in an oil drum. During the hearings, Time magazine’s June 9, 1975, issue reported that Russell Bufalino and Sam Giancana were the crime bosses behind the Mob’s ties to the CIA, the botched Bay of Pigs invasion, and the plan to poison Fidel Castro. Armed with volumes of testimony and the CIA’s confession, the Church Committee ended up drafting legislation limiting the CIA’s involvement in the affairs of independent countries. The legislation passed but became a hot topic again following the 9/11 tragedy involving a series of four attacks by the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda upon the United States in New York City and the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Some legislators believed the Church Committee had gone too far in curtailing the CIA’s covert activities.
In the late 1950s the McClellan Committee had one objective: To uncover corruption in the labor movement and to put Jimmy Hoffa behind bars. Under Robert Kennedy’s tenacious Get Hoffa Squad, the team was formed specifically to catch Hoffa. They were relentless in uncovering a pattern of stolen and squandered Union funds, sweetheart contracts, conflicts of interest among employers and labor leaders, fake paper locals, and rejection of fair procedures to members. Hoffa became the prime target. In cities across America, physical confrontation among Unions was a constant threat. Organized crime associates including gangsters like Bill Bufalino, Angelo Meli, and Peter Licavoli of the Motor
