The Applause sign—a cooperative presence never available in nightclubs or on film sets—prodded the studio audience into prompt, enthusiastic clapping, during which Skitch Henderson, the Tonight Show conductor, nodded a signal to Kallman and they segued into the theme song from Hank.

Amping up his smile, the new sitcom star sang of himself in the third person:

He’ll drive, clean your clothes,

Be your butler or a porter,

If it means another quarter

In the bank.

He’ll get his degree,

His Phi Beta key,

And get ’em both for free!

That’s Hank.
