CHAPTER TEN

I never would’ve found out Marjorie had been snooping outside Messing Academy if I hadn’t caught Nurse Wilson and Nurse Pasternak in the alcove outside Witch’s Brew on Essex Street, discussing extra security measures after school.

“We can’t exactly do warding like you have on the roof at Gallows Hill.” Nurse Pasternak shook her head. “Closing off our observatory to clairvoyant students, or others studying astrology, is out of the question.”

“You should have your principal contact Headmaster Hawkins from Hawthorn Academy,” Nurse Wilson said. “Space magic can work around that, especially combined with a telekinetic talent like you. It’s too bad almost everyone else there is a mentalist, though.”

“It’s true that physical talents like mine work well for security. Our administrators have always relied on preventing problems through clairvoyant prediction. Or telepathic monitoring.”

“But we won’t have enough telepaths with Mr. Parkman on sabbatical.” Nurse Wilson froze and narrowed her eyes. “Stop talking. Someone’s observing us.”

“Sorry.” I stepped out from the shadows of the doorway I’d hidden in. “This wasn’t an accident. I listened in on purpose. It’s not my place.”

“You ought to know better by now, Mavis.” Nurse Wilson shook a finger.

“I disagree with both of you.” Nurse Pasternak smirked. “This is Mavis’s business. They should keep her in the loop.”

“It’s Gallows Hill policy not to concern our students with security matters.” She sighed. “This incident happened on Messing’s campus, so your take on it is more valid than mine for now.”

“Before you go overboard deferring to Messing Academy’s rules, what do you mean, Mavis ought to know better? Has something like this happened before?”

“She has a habit of listening in doorways or around corners.” Nurse Wilson faced me. “It’s gotten you into trouble before. Your friends, too.”

“I see.” Nurse Pasternak nodded. “That sounds inconvenient, but not everybody finds trouble easy to avoid.”

“I listen in because trouble finds me.” I sighed. “If eavesdropping gives me a leg up, I’m not breaking the habit. Because I want my friends to be safer. I wish I could help with it.”

“The staff at Gallows Hill already knows because you always remind them,” Nurse Wilson said. “We only want to let you be a teenager while you can.”

“I’ll pass your message along, Mavis,” Nurse Pasternak said. “It’s no use leaving someone in the dark when they have enemies waiting to attack from there, Amanda.”

“I wish I could say I enjoyed our latest impasse, Muriel.” Nurse Wilson collected her coffee. “It seems we’re fated to disagree forever on points like these.”

With that, she strode away down Essex Street. I stood, wringing my hands as I watched her leave. Half of the adults in my life couldn’t say anything because of their past mistakes, while the other half wouldn’t in the name of sparing me pain.

I’d figured the reason they erred on the side of sheltering was that so few of them understood toxic family members. Why was Nurse Pasternak so sympathetic? I had to find out.

“Thanks for your support, but I’m not sure why you’re giving it.
