Chapter 21

Alex took Katlin’s hand as he helped her out of the limousine and kissed the palm again before they walked into the exclusive club. He smiled at her reddened lips and slightly flushed cheeks. She was gorgeous. And he wanted more.

As they started into the private club, the hairs on the back of Alex’s neck bristled. He suddenly felt as though he was in someone’s crosshairs. As covertly as possible, he scanned the area and dropped Katlin’s hand, in case he needed to get to his guns fast.

She was already reaching into her purse. He was afraid she’d pull out a gun but, instead, removed a mirror and played with the hair around her face. “He’s behind the huge azalea bush across the street.”

What? She wasn’t primping. “You can see him?” he asked.

“Yeah. Paparazzi.” Her voice was low so it wouldn’t carry. “Happens often at this club. Sports celebrities show up all the time. We’re nobody important to him.”

Alex turned his head and gave the man a threatening glare.

Katlin excused herself immediately inside the door to check her makeup in the ladies’ lounge. Alex also availed himself and slid into the men’s room. Damn how Kat could make his blood boil. He pressed cold paper towels to his face but wished he could stuff them into his khaki dress slacks. He was very thankful for his suit jacket, which he casually buttoned to cover his prominent erection.

For the third night in a row, they were having dinner together…with other people. And she was leaving tomorrow. He needed to be alone with Kat for more than half an hour in the back of the limo. When he took her home tonight, he’d suggest a long walk on the beach.

He had to wait in the lavish lobby only a minute for her emerge. She had repaired her light makeup and maintained an inner glow that he found irresistible. He wanted to grab her away from their commitment and hide until her flight the next day.

“Ms. Callahan,” the maître d’ called as he approached. “Mr. Wolf.” He nodded to Alex. “Mr. and Mrs. Howell are this way.” He gestured, and Katlin led the way into the posh dining room.

The sooner they got started with this evening, the sooner they’d be able to leave. And he’d have Kat naked and under him as quickly as possible.

Dinner with Barry and his wife, Sherri, was just what it was, four high school classmates together again after many, many years. Stories and laughter bounced around the table, years of who-did-what-to-whom catch-up and delicious food, all mixed with great wine. Alex had truly had a great time.

As they finished the last morsels of dessert, Sherri asked, “Alex, I heard that you played Goldilocks and the Three Bears when you arrived. You found a blonde asleep in your bed.”

He slid a glance at Kat, who blushed. “Not exactly. Yes, she’d slept in my bed, but she discovered me and thought I was an intruder. She held me at gunpoint.
