The battalion held on doggedly, though all the volunteers could do was to cower in the trenches, hoping for the barrage to end: ‘You could hear the screaming of the bombs and always the screaming seemed to be coming towards the back of your neck.’99 Some Nationalist planes flew very low, picking out their targets: ‘You could see them as they dived down at us.
