The next stop, we got two motel rooms. Mira kept glancing at Jax and then at me before pacing to the window and peering out the blinds. Abe had gone to get dinner, but it felt like he was just trying to get some space from the alpha females in our lineup. I couldn’t blame him.
“So, who sleeps where?” Mira asked, looking from bed to bed.
“El sleeps with Abe,” Jax said with a saccharine smile. She’d taken an instant dislike to the slayer, who couldn’t help but view the succubus with distaste.
I opened my mouth to say that it wasn’t like that, then zipped it. I did sleep with Abe. Making excuses would only make me look like I was lying. We’d had separate tents, and it’s not like she wouldn’t have been able to hear anything going on in ours, but I guess motels were different.
In any case, Mira clearly liked fighting for Abe better than being worshipped from afar.
She curled her lip at me, looking me up and down. There wasn’t that much to see. I was wearing a big white nightshirt with ‘never trust a Goblin’ in white wax across the front in messy letters. This was my first test shirt, not good enough for Met, so I had to make another one. It was the last shirt in my wardrobe. I needed to do laundry.
I stood up, bag slung over my shoulder. “Anyone else need to shower? No? Great. I’ll take my time. You guys can just relish this opportunity for female bonding, woman to woman, slayer to slayer, mano y mano… Yeah. Don’t kill each other.”
Mira smirked. “We wouldn’t. I’d kill her.”
Jax curled her lip and gave her a look of death. “Are you always this cocky?”
“Yeah. You got a problem with that?”
I ducked into the bathroom. Part of me hoped someone would kill someone. Me. Kill me and put me out of my misery. Things were still strained between me and Abe. I shouldn’t have gotten him cake. I shouldn’t have called Vincent. I shouldn’t have refused to go just because he dissed my Unicorns, my stupid birthday surprise.
I pulled Met’s papers out of the bag. Why did the adorable Fae Gnome steal my paper? Would it be a problem? Everything was a problem. I leaned my elbows on the counter and stared at my reflection.
“Met, I get that we can’t be together, but maybe we could still exchange letters. I miss doing choreography with you. It keeps me up at night, thinking of all the dancing we’ll never get to do. I miss you so much. It’s been long enough I should feel better. I mean, I do feel better. I don’t panic anymore when I see red, and I don’t think about ending everything, but I still wake up and think that you’re there, wrapped around me. I mean, one morning that happens, and I think it’s going to be like that for the rest of my life. I need to hear your voice again.
