Late that night Dad rang to say the pacemaker was in place and everything had gone to plan.

‘How are you feeling?’ I asked.

‘Fine,’ replied Dad. ‘Hungry. They haven’t given me a feed yet.’

‘How did the operation go?’

‘Fine,’ replied Dad. ‘You’d think they’d have biscuits or something. Have you fixed the fence in Nana’s Paddock yet?’

‘It was already dark when we got home, Dad. And Mark and Kathrin were drenching all day.’

Dad was silent for a moment. The sounds of the hospital echoed down the line, beeps and clunks and the soft voices of nurses.

‘Better get it done first thing tomorrow,’ he replied.
