Chapter 17

Jonah

My mouth flooded with a mixture of my blood and the taste of Levi. A part of me wanted to get up and chase him immediately, but another part knew I needed to come up with a lie first. He’d proven he wasn’t the type to take no for an answer… and even though I wanted to find him and carve my name on his heart so he never thought to run again, I wanted him to want to stay with me.

I wanted him, and it was one of the strangest sensations I’d experienced in a long time.

I took the time to get dressed, and as I was pulling on my boots, I heard the front door slam. Alarm shot through me, and suspicion caught hold in my chest.

He said he didn’t belong to me.

How did he intend to prove it?

I ignored the urge to charge out of the room after him, but apparently not as well as I thought. I was going fast enough that I skidded to a halt when I nearly ran into Duncan.

“What did you do to Levi?” he hissed before I had a chance to question why he was here. He and Levi’s dad weren’t supposed to be back until tomorrow. There was a reason I’d been with Levi so freely in my room. I hadn’t heard him come in. Was I so distracted with what was going on between the two of us that I allowed my senses to slip?

I didn’t have time to question the implications because Duncan was still staring at me with a level of animosity in his eyes I hadn’t earned, even if he did think I’d upset Levi.

Even if I had.

I was already planning a way to alleviate that sting if Duncan would just get out of my way so I could catch up to him before he was too far away.

“Why are you here?” I asked the question, but I was barely paying attention. My eyes were for the door behind him, for the sound of a car I could hear starting.

“I work here.” Duncan deadpanned, then brought his keys up to jingle them at me as though to make a point.

I wanted to rip them from his fingers and stab him with them—I hadn’t killed someone with a key before, but I knew I could make it work. Also, he had information I needed.

“What’s wrong with Levi?” If he assumed I’d done something to him…

“Don’t play dumb. No one was here but you and him, and he tore out of here like a bat out of hell dressed like he was ready to fuck everyone in town.” Duncan was staring at me like he could peel back the layers of my skin and read some secret novel written along my veins. I rolled my eyes and made to push past him, even though his words were burning at the back of my brain.

Like he was going to fuck everyone in town.

I had no reason to care.

I had no reason for it to bother me.
