RIGA - CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

The shadow banked, a trail of stars unfolding in its wake, and Riga released her breath. A part of her had feared the stars wouldn’t reappear, that the thing in the sky had absorbed their light.

But the pounding in her throat wasn’t entirely due to fear. Coming face-to-face with the mystery, the coming fight, standing side-by-side with Donovan…

He turned to smile at her. “I’ve missed this.”

Riga choked back a laugh. She had too, and she shouldn’t have. There were two young witches who didn’t need to get killed tonight. And they wouldn’t. Not if she and Donovan had anything to say about it.

Riga motioned to the others and strode around the corner of the house. Donovan hung back, taking up the protective rear, ushering the other two women after her.

Karin swore quietly. “It’s here again.”

“We’ve got to get rid of this thing,” Jayce said. “What if it attacks Susan or one of her guests or neighbors?”

The earth witch was right. Why hadn’t there been reports of any attacks or missing persons? Was it only attracted to magical practitioners? Riga swallowed and told herself that would be a good thing.

“Riga and I will keep watch over Wits’ End tonight,” Donovan said. “You said it hasn’t made any appearances during the day?”

“Not yet,” Jayce said, dour.

The shadow neared the Victorian and veered away.

“I don’t think it can get through that ward. Look.” Riga pointed. “It’s not passing the picket fence.” But they had to get rid of the sluagh. “You’ve sent creatures from Fairy back before. How did you do it?”

Jayce shifted her weight, her expression sheepish. “We created a Go Home spell and infused it in water.”

“How did you apply it?” Riga asked.

Even in the darkness, Riga could see the flush on Jayce’s face. “Water balloons.”

Balloons weren’t a bad idea, Riga thought, grudging. “I don’t suppose you brought any?”

“No.” Karin looked away and bit her lip.

“I should have thought of it,” Jayce said bitterly. “We knew what was here. But I was so focused on—” She pressed her lips into a firm line.

“Have you got your iron?” Riga rubbed her injured shoulder.

Donovan pulled a bone-handled blade from one of the high, white socks he wore.

Riga arched a brow. “You really did go all in on the Scottish outfit.”

“It was for the kids.” Donovan pressed one hand to the chest of his frilly white top. “They had costumes too. Minus the knife,” he added hastily.

“I’ve got an iron knife,” Karin said.

Her sister grimaced. “I got nothing.”

Annoyance sparked inside Riga’s chest. Jayce had been resisting Riga’s presence from the start. She didn’t know if it was stubbornness on the young witch’s part or if she’d done something to offend her. But tonight they needed to work together.

“With a wingspan that big,” Donovan said, “that thing won’t be able to maneuver in the trees. But it will be able to pick us off on the street.”

“All right then,” Riga said. “We may as well test our theory about whether or not it can cross into Wits’ End.
