Sam

The silence of the apartment was more than Sam could bear. She watched the clock for what seemed like hours, waiting for April to return. All hopes to repair the damage she’d created plummeted when Crystal called from the bar, informing her that April was there talking to Rachel.

Sam knew Rachel would tell April everything. April was right: the relationship was a sham, and if she’d been truthful, she would have admitted that she’d never really loved her. Yet, in that moment, her emotions were all over the place. One second, she was relieved that April was gone, the next, she felt like her world had crashed around her. She was no fool. She and April were not right together, and the relationship was on borrowed time. Sam wanted to agree with her, but she couldn’t. Maybe it was the rejection, maybe the thought of living alone again was too much, or maybe April took the control she’d held dear and it confused her.

Defeated by the reality of her actions, Sam retrieved all the clothes from the wardrobe and emptied the dresser drawers into a box. Within three hours she’d packed everything she wanted. As for the rest, April could donate it.

She felt ashamed and guilty. She was the one who had convinced April to move in with her, promising to never hurt her. She really hadn’t minded sharing her space; she agreed the place needed a feminine touch.

It was obvious there was not enough room for both their furniture in the small apartment. April protested, but in the end, she sold what she could and gave away the rest.

Suitcases in hand, Sam scanned the room and gasped when she realized she’d almost forgotten her mother’s urn. She carefully lifted it off the mantle and clutched it close to her, letting out a discrete sigh. Okay, let’s do this. With a heavy heart, she scribbled a quick letter to April.
