As far as parties went, Lake always threw a good one. It was too bad that Zach wasn’t in the mood to enjoy it. He felt like he’d been in a fog since last night.

No.

He knew that being so blindsided by it had been arrogant. That assuming that Avery would automatically say yes was, in hindsight, presumptuous of them. But in his defence, it had definitely felt out of left field after that first kiss.

That fucking phenomenal first kiss.

They’d never treated Avery badly. That didn’t, of course, mean he had to say yes, but considering that Avery had once written their hyphenated last names on his notebooks, they had probably been a bit more confident in his answer being a yes than they should have been.

Zach let out a breath and ran a hand through his hair. It was going to take him a while to find his balance again. And to see Avery without his heart feeling like someone had plunged a knife into it.

Warm arms slipped around his waist, and a scent as familiar to him as breathing filled his nostrils. He grasped Felix’s hands and squeezed. “Did you see that Tyler and Lucas have already snuck off for a quickie?” he said with a small laugh.

“They’re like teenagers discovering sex for the first time,” Felix murmured in his ear.

Considering they’d been married roughly ten years now, that was impressive. Zach and Felix weren’t as explosive as them—they could control themselves in public most of the time—but Zach blamed their lack of control on Lucas, definitely. The firefighter was the instigator of most of their arrestable offences.

Felix kissed Zach’s shoulder and then looked over the large array of food covering Lake’s long kitchen counter. “Did we bring enough dip?”

“I hope he likes it because he’s going to be eating it for the next year.” Zach had been in a fog when they’d gone shopping, so they’d bought a lot more than they probably should have. Lake liked entertaining people—he was a people person and wasn’t great at being alone—so Zach knew that none of it would go to waste anyway.

Zach grabbed a cracker and a generous amount of French onion dip and shoved the whole thing in his mouth, chewing and then washing it down with some cold beer. “Well,” he said, moving his tongue around his mouth to get the pieces off his teeth. “It’s better than MREs.”

“Anything is better than rations.”

“Some of it isn’t vomit-inducing terrible,” Zach said. “I like the condensed milk tubes.”

Felix chuckled. “I know,” he said. “Remember our last deployment together?”

“I didn’t ask for you to share with me; you chose to do that yourself.” Zach had some good memories of that one, and it wasn’t all about the condensed milk.

“So I did.”

“I have a serious question for you,” Zach said, turning in Felix’s arms. He rested one hand on Felix’s hip, looking him over and admiring the way his jeans tightened around all the best parts of him. The white button-down shirt he wore was loose fitting, but that was okay; Zach knew what was underneath.
