Chapter 13

Lee jogged towards the stables, needing the exercise and focus so he didn’t follow Serena into his house and ignore Mr Everything. The horse, all his horses, came first no matter what else was happening in his life. He arrived in the stable block to find the day’s work was done, the horses were fed, and most of the staff had gone home. Udyta had hung around waiting for the transporter and was in the act of unloading Mr Everything as he arrived. Lee sent her home for dinner, forcing himself to deal with Mr Everything himself, removing the travelling boots, and walking the young horse for twenty minutes to stretch his legs before putting him in his box and feeding him. He needed space and walking Mr Everything took away the pulsing restless energy inspired by kissing Serena, the anticipation of knowing she waited for him, resting her tired brain, so she’d be ready for more kisses this evening. The way she cared for herself and understood her limits while pushing against them wrapped him in a warm admiration, a deeper layer of attraction than the pure lust coursing his veins. He doubled checked everything, the same as every night, making sure every horse had enough water and hay for the night, even though he wanted to get home to Serena now. With all the horses happy and settled, he marched back to the house with his hands shoved in his pockets.

Tramping up the stairs to his back door, he looked around for Frankel. He hadn’t seen his dog all day. Some of the tightness in his chest eased as he spotted Frankel on the porch, eating dinner. Serena leaned out of the door, gifting him a vision of domesticity and the future. His heart leaped, kicking and bucking like a horse let out into a paddock after the rain, when the grass smelled sweet and the air had been washed fresh with the dust settled. He stamped down the thought—he had no idea how to make a loving family, and he sure as heck wasn’t going to risk being just like his toxic parents. Serena deserved someone who could give her the real love she grew up with. Her children deserved a father who knew how to be the father he hadn’t had. Confusion smeared over the undercurrent of desire, adding more complications to the picture, like a greasy smudge on glass.

‘Hey there. I fed Frankel, is that okay?’

‘Of course. I wondered why he hadn’t come down to the stables to beg for food.’

‘He was locked in his kennel, whining, when I came out to see how long you’d be.’ A frown marred her features.

‘Don’t worry, he won’t have been locked up all day. He has the run of the farm, but the staff know to put him in there at night if I’m not back from the races yet.’ Lee trusted his staff to look after his dog.

‘If you say so.’ Serena didn’t look convinced. Lee
