“Nope.”

“Tomorrow, early, I’m going to ride ahead, and I won’t be back till I find some.”

“Alone?” I hated thinking of him out there and nothing around but a thousand miles of desert and wind.

“It’s best.”

“Promise you’ll come back.”

He turned around, pulled me on his lap, and kissed me. “I’ll try my damndest, Allie. I don’t want to lose you.”

And there was nothing to do but settle for that.

I saw him off just before sunup. He was riding his bay horse, Roman, that was part mustang and tough as rawhide. If any horse would get through, it was Roman. That’s all the consolation I had that day as we kept on rolling across that hard, stony ground, with the wind picking up, and dust everywhere, and that sun that never seemed to move. I prayed that day, although I never put much stock in the notion that God would work a miracle just on account of somebody’s asking for it. I prayed in my head. My lips was so dry I couldn’t have said a word out loud. And just when I was about to quit, just when Grandpa’s lead horse stumbled and stopped in its tracks, we heard it. A horse coming at a trot.

“Praise God!” Grandma scrambled off the wagon and went running to meet Virge, looking like a tumbleweed, her skirts blowing, her legs going every which way, and her arms spread wide.
