On the ferry, Mark takes the kids to get popcorn and I excuse myself to find Caroline. My stomach twists every time I think about the fact that Trista isn’t here.

“There you are,” Caroline says, finding me on the stairwell leading to the upper deck. “Pete is with Mark and the kids.” She gives me a hug when we reach the top of the stairs, the wind whipping at us as we step outside.

“You look great,” I tell her.

“Thanks.” She grins. “I actually wanted to talk to you about that.”

I laugh. “About how great you look? You’re crazy, Caroline.” I shake my head. Her face is so bright. Glowing. “Oh shit, are you pregnant?”

She claps her hands together. “Yes! I am. Crazy right? I mean it’s still early, only eight weeks, but we heard the heartbeat and everything. It’s like, really happening.”

“Wow, that’s amazing,” I say, knowing her and Pete have been trying for two years. She’s only thirty-one, two years younger than me, so she said she wasn’t worried yet about it taking a while. But she is so ready to start this phase of her life.

“That’s why I wanted to talk to you,” she says, leading me to a row of chairs on the deck. “Not about the pregnancy, but about motherhood.”

“What do you mean?” No one ever asks me for parenting advice, but maybe now that my family is growing she sees me in a different light. Less a mess and more a master.

“Well.” She rests her hand on mine. “It’s just that now that I’m going to be a mother, too, I feel like it’s my duty to say something. Talk about the thing no one else wants to say.”

I shake my head, not following.

“Look, I know you love Betsy, but whenever I’ve been with her the last few months, she seems to be closing herself up more and more.”

“What do you mean?”

“You know how she struggles with friends, I know you do. But with Holden living with you, it seems to make her more anxious than ever. Jumpier. Less free.”

I stiffen at this line of conversation.

“I know I’m not an expert on Betsy--”

I cut her off. “Right, you aren’t.”

“Maybe not, but I know she is hurting, Em. And it started when that boy came to you.”

“When you say ‘that boy’, are you referring to my son?” I ask, my heart pounding, my eyes tight.

“That’s the thing, he doesn’t have to be. You can be the mom you always wanted to be if you put a stop to all this,” she says.

I gasp, incredulous. “Are you kidding me right now?”

“No, Em. I’m not. I know you don’t want to hear this, but it’s my job as your friend to tell you what everyone is thinking. What everyone is too scared to say to your face. You’re making a mistake.”

“A mistake? You think Holden is a mistake?” Tears fill my eyes, anger blooms in my chest. “He may have his flaws, but so do I, Caroline. So do all of us.
