Chapter Fourteen
Tanner-September
âIâve got a touch up at four, so we only have a couple of hours. I still donât know why the fuck Iâm apartment hunting with you, but whatever.â
âBecause Stacey is anti me moving out and Zander⦠He canât. Iâm short on the friends list, and I hate doing this shit alone. Quit whining.â
Ricky fastened his seatbelt and flipped through the radio stations until he found some horrible, new age country music and turned it up.
Crinkling a nose at his selection, I glared. âWhat the fuck is this shit? Seriously?â
âHey, you want my company? Deal with it. I like it. So where to first?â
I pulled out into traffic and steered the truck toward Bloor Street. âThere are a few off Jarvis I wanted to look at. Same general neighborhood so Stacey shouldnât be too pissed. I need to be able to help her out still.â
We drove down the busy street in silence for a while, listening to some Carrie Underwood song that was making my ears bleed. I was pretty versatile with my music, but I figured I must have some weird, chemical imbalance in my brain that prevented me from stomaching country of any kind. All I could do was put up with it since Ricky had been kind enough to offer to come along.
âSo, whatâs up with your boy, Zander? He never comes and joins us when we all hang, yet heâs all you talk about at the shop. Is he closeted or something and doesnât want us knowing you two are fucking?â
Nearly driving off the road, I hit him with a heated scowl that could melt iron. âWeâre not fucking. Heâs a friend, Ricky. He has a boyfriend.â
âOkay, relax.â He held up his hands in defense. âI didnât know. I havenât seen you out with anyone. You donât club it. I figured maybe there was something there.â
I wish.
âThereâs not.â Staring ahead at the road, I ground my teeth. So Iâd been completely celibate since Iâd moved there and met Zander. Big deal. It hadnât even crossed my mind until Ricky brought it up.
âSo, no boyfriend for you I take it?â
âNo.â
Pulling into a parking space at the complex on Jarvis, I then cut the engine and glanced up at the high rise. âCome on, letâs check it out.â
Thankfully, Ricky dropped the subject while we went through the place. It was a decent size and well kept. I was surprised. Initially, Iâd expected it to be a dive with the price being so reasonably low. Money wasnât much of a concern. I had a decent cushion from selling my half of the shop back in Thunder Bay along with the little bit leftover from what my grandparents had left me, helped me live relatively comfortably.
âWhy do you need two bedrooms?â
âI donât know. Gaming room, office. I like the bigger living space. The one-bedrooms typically have smaller everything. Kitchen, living room, you know? Too cramped.â
After viewing three more apartments in the areaâeach consecutively rattier than the one beforeâI decided the first was the diamond in the ruff, even if I had to wait nearly two months to move in.
