Chapter Twelve

Jake

Two weeks later Jake found himself parked in front of Mattie’s place, eager as hell to see his boy. Mattie had been working and attending his classes nonstop and they hadn’t had a chance to see each other since the morning after he’d helped move the boys into their new place.

There had been many phone calls and even more texts, Jake feeling the need to ensure his boy was taking care of himself, doing regular check-ins to make sure Mattie was eating and getting enough rest. He’d even taken to having food delivered when he knew Mattie’s schedule for the day. It wasn’t enough. He knew deep down it wasn’t anywhere near enough. The longer they’d been apart the more exhausted Mattie sounded.

But he’d done his best to make the most of the limited time they did have to communicate. They learned more about each other over those weeks, little snippets of each other’s lives here and there when they had time to text or chat for a few before Mattie had to either go to work, school, or study. One of the things he was most excited to learn more about was Mattie’s hopes for the future and how his education was going to get him there.

His boy was being good at telling him, the night before each day, what his schedule was and what he had to get done. But the list of things was long, and Jake knew something had to give. It was like putting a Band-Aid on a gunshot wound. Only a stop gap. They’d never had time to really sit down and go over Mattie’s work and school schedule which had changed so much during the two weeks, Jake couldn’t find a pattern anywhere besides his class times.

One thing was for sure. His boy was run ragged. He could tell he was getting worn down when they’d had a couple of video chats while they’d been apart. He hated not having more control over Mattie’s life, but it seemed getting the time to sort out the details hadn’t been in the cards yet. That needed to be remedied, which was why he was there at Mattie’s. Well, that and he was going crazy being unable to see his boy.

Mattie finally had a day off work and though it was in the middle of the week and after two of Mattie’s early morning classes, Jake hadn’t hesitated to take the afternoon and the following morning off to be able to spend time with his boy.

When he rang the bell, he heard the boys yelling at each other but couldn’t make out the words. When the door finally opened, he was surprised to be greeted by Carter and not Mattie. Though one of those raised voices he’d heard belonged to his boy, so at least Jake knew he was there.

“Hey, Jake.” Carter ushered him in.

“Hi, Carter. How are you doing?”

“I’m doing okay. How is Sammy?”

Jake smiled. “Frustrated his brother won’t let him break the lease they signed and find himself a new roommate.
