CHAPTER 15

TRISTAN

I toss my gloves to one of the equipment managers as we make our way off the ice. We fell to Buffalo three – two in regulation. I’m having a hard time not taking responsibility for the loss, seeing as how they scored their third goal while I sat in the box for a minor penalty with under two minutes to play. It fucking sucks, but it is what it is.

“Don’t beat yourself up over that call,” Ryker says to me as we enter the visitors' locker room. It isn’t anything fancy, visitor ones usually aren’t. Just a U-shaped room with spots for each of us. The goalies have their own section, both goalies requiring more space than the rest of us due to the size of their gear. I always thought my bag was big growing up, until I made friends with a few of the goalies.

“Was a piece of shit call,” I tell him, and he nods his agreement.

“I won’t argue with you on that.”

“Not your fault, man,” Blake, our goalie tells me as he walks past. “I should have had that puck in my pads. I still don’t know how it tricked through.” He shakes his head side to side.

“You wouldn’t have had to face it had I kept my ass out of the box and on the ice,” I tell him.

“Let’s leave it in the past. Look forward to the next game. We need to get out there and win those two points,” he tells me and we bump fists. If there's anything I’ve learned from this team of guys it’s how important it is to look forward and not dwell on the past. We can learn from our experiences and past, but we need to leave it all behind us and move forward to grow.

I sit down in my stall, taking a moment to rest. I shake up the blender bottle one of the training staff left for me with a protein shake ready to go. They make sure all of us have adequate nutrition when we come off the ice, whether that’s after a practice, game-day morning skate, or after a hard fought game. Once I finish the drink, I start stripping all my gear off. The equipment managers collect everything, making sure it is all dried off or cleaned. It is their job to pack everything up and get it to the next place.

My rookie season in the NHL, I made the mistake of packing my own bag before the first trip. The equipment manager of my team had to unpack and re-pack it the exact way he liked things to be done so that he could verify that I didn’t forget anything (spoiler alert, I’d missed one of my elbow pads), but also he packed it a very specific way so that everything would fit how he wanted it to for traveling.

Once I’m showered and dressed, I make my way to the motor coach that is waiting outside the back entrance for us.
