Chapter 10
Arliss awakened to dawnâs grayish light filling the room. He immediately sensed he was alone in the bed. He turned on his side and verified that, yes, Seanâs side of the bed was empty. He ran a hand over the pillow and the sheets on his loverâs side of the bed and found them cool to the touch.
This was unusual. Sean never left him alone in bedâat least, he hadnât until this morning. Something about it just didnât feel right. The apartment was quiet. The living room was just off the bedroom, but there was no soft murmur from the TV or the stereo. Arliss tilted his head up, looking at the crack where the bottom of the bedroom door met the floor, and saw no strip of light.
Had Sean left? Was he sitting out there in the dark? Could he not stand to lie next to him? Whatever way he thought of it, there was little comfort for Arliss.
He sat up in bed, wishing for a smoke, but that was forbidden in the house. If he really wanted a cigarette, he would have to get up and go through the living room to access the balcony. But something about opening that closed bedroom door and facing Sean scared him. The prospect frightened him enough to even temporarily curb his addiction to nicotine and the comfort he got from it, which he actually needed right at this moment.
Last night, when theyâd gotten home, had not gone well. Once Arliss told Sean that Josh was there to scout him for a porno movie, it was all Sean needed to hear. Arliss never saw someone shut down as quickly as Sean. It was like his eyes went dark and something inside locked up, freezing him out. Arliss wanted to tell him how being in porn had always been his dream, especially ever since he started dancing. It was sort of like the Holy Grail for him and his fellow dancers. He also wanted to let Sean know, once again, that he was the only man for him, and working on a film set wouldnât change his feelings. He still would be emotionally faithful to Sean, even if he was getting it on with other guys on camera.
But he never had a chance to trot out those arguments because Sean looked so hurt and closed. It seemed to be too much for him to consider that Arliss would want to do such a thingâor even that such an idea had been proposed (though it hadnât, not really, not yet).
When Arliss had tried to talk to him, Sean simply said, âLetâs just go to bed.â
Arliss had tried to hug him, to kiss him, and in bed, attempted to grope him under the sheets, but he was rebuffed at every turn, and that was a first for them in their new relationship. In their two or so months together, last night was the first night they hadnât made love. Sourly, Arliss thought chances were good this was about to be the first morning they didnât, as well.
