Chapter 22

The crisis had been averted – for now. With the so-called Woman of the Veil destroyed and her cult freed, I didn’t have to worry about the invasion starting earlier than I intended. But I was curious to learn how the Controller would react to the death of its own disciple. The Grand Architect had reached out to her long ago, establishing a connection for the purpose of learning. Was she the only one? Or were there others that I needed to worry about? I wasn’t sure, but my instincts told me not to worry. For the godspell had been destroyed and that was Jepner’s only way of controlling immigration between planes.

Without access to the spell, Jepner would have to manually manipulate the threads in order to alter the rules of planar travel, something he wasn’t about to do. And he knew well enough to avoid creating another godspell during this crisis. I was growing excited at the prospect of Jepner’s involvement, for while he was despised by the rest of the gods, he was powerful and wise enough to speak the truth to them. Even if they all didn’t believe him, the weaker ones would certainly offer their help, if for no other reason than to get on his good side.

But still, I couldn’t just sit around hoping that the gods would come to my aid. They were unpredictable and difficult to deal with. Even if they did decide to fight against the invasion, would they work with me or perhaps just focus their energies elsewhere? I would need to continue building in preparation for the future.

As the mortals of the land prepared greatly for war, I was getting ready for their inevitable deaths. In any battle, even one with a victory, there would be losses on both sides. While the population of warriors who would be fighting was quite numerous, there weren’t nearly as many capable mortals as there were Giztha. Even if one warrior were to kill a hundred Invaders before being slain, it still wouldn’t be enough.

Yet, in Yehan, death was but a mere transition to a different state. The body would be eliminated but the soul would live on, transferring to one of the many afterlives that were in the domain of the gods. I had once before attempted to interfere with this cycle by creating an afterlife that I was responsible for, known as New Orcsamar. This afterlife was to be home to the orcs and would allow them to interact with the world on my behalf—the greatest and strongest were called Einherjar.

Predictably, the gods were unhappy with such a creation. They interfered, cut down my limb hosting the portal to this afterlife, and caused me a great deal of anguish. I had since been distracted by other, more pressing matters, preventing me from creating another afterlife for my loyal orc followers. But now I was beginning to see the benefit from building a new plane of existence.
