Whilst travelling back from London on the 1830 Kings Cross to Newcastle service on 23 December, we were receiving reports of OHL damage at Bawtry. A service in front had brought down the wires and, by the time we had joined the queue, at least eight trains were in front of us waiting to get past the damaged section. This involves instigating what is called single line working and can take at least an hour to implement along with the necessary paper work. Usually in these instances other trains are also standing behind the original train as the power to the OHL is automatically switched off between neutral sections, one either side of the incident. This means these trains are trapped in the dead section without any means of power and also no heating. This was the case this time. Two other trains were also trapped and had to be dragged back under the live section before they could continue their journey. When this happens we are deployed to assist in the rescue and to ensure that the locomotives can recover from being stationary, in this case for over six hours’ before being rescued. Not the best time to have an OHL problem, just before Christmas! Being late in the evening meant the repairs would be completed in time for the next day’s service. By the time I got home it was 0130 in the morning.
