The two of them bend down to take each of Lydia's forearms. Then they bring her up, pulling at her like a wishbone.

"I don't think I can walk," she says when they set her down next to Barry. We look at her feet. Two unidentifiable lumps of meat, the sort of thing you might see hanging in a Chinatown butcher's window.

"We'll help you," Wallace says. Strokes the back of his knuckles over her cheek.

"You're bleeding," she says.

"It's not my blood."

"Thank God."

"But we have to go right now, Lydia."

She nods. We all nod.

"We'll run straight across to those tents," he goes on. "Beside them, there's a path to the river. Before you get all the way down, it forks—go right. That's where the canoes are. I'm going ahead in case they wake up before we get that far. Crossman and Bates, you help Lydia. And Barry, all you have to do is follow them."

"What if they come—"

"Is there a meeting place that—"

But Wallace is already striding across the clearing.

We do as we've been told.
