One day, when Macky was three, Wanda had a job scheduled, but Sandy had a last-minute conflict, and Wanda wasnât going to ask her mother, so she brought Macky with her. She packed books and snacks, telling him to sit and read while she worked. Checking on him as she moved from room to room, and seeing he was absorbed, she figured this might work in a pinch. In the living room, at the other end of the house from him, she plugged in the vacuum and started to run it over the carpet. Then she heard Macky shrieking, âNot the woud fing, Mama!â So, she turned off the machine and went into the den to pick him up. At home, she always waited until he was fast asleep and behind a closed door before she vacuumed because he hated the sound. âSorry, Bud. We can go home soon.â Clearly, she couldnât bring him to jobs until he was older. Sheâd have to find a backup for Sandy. Maybe Michelle, but she had her hands full with three kids and one on the way.
That night, after she put Macky to bed, she sat with her book but couldnât stop worrying about him. Was her mother right? Did Macky have real problems that would make him stand out as weird? Was being smart and unathletic going to make him an outcast? How could she help him? She tried to remember things about Whit in school, but theyâd never shared a class, and sheâd barely seen him except during awards assemblies, where he was always called up to the stage to receive a prize. She knew nothing about him. Whitâs mother could tell her stories from about his childhood, about his medical history, but of course, she could never, ever tell that secret. Would Mackyâs life be as hard as Whitâs?
