Chapter 14
I MANAGED to get through the week without hiring someone to whack Kylie. That was a major accomplishment. She was still being miserable about only having five hundred at her wedding. Get this, she actually thought with only five hundred attendees none of the news stations would come to cover it. I couldnât make this shit up.
I was almost ready to give in and spill the news about Ben and I being all loved up just so Iâd have the distraction of the ladies at work teasing the hell out of me. Anything would have been better than all Kylie, all the time.
Dante was finally feeling a little better by Friday, though he wasnât up to doing a full-on clubbing night. We had dinner and a few drinks at our favorite hangout near my place. I told Dante about planning to golf with Ben, Serge, and Jin the next day, and he gave me this look like Iâd definitely lost it.
âYouâve never golfed a day in your life. What are you going to do, caddy for them?â
âNo, Iâm gonna play. Iâll suck, yeah, but Ben taught me how to grip a club last weekend on the phone. While I was in bed.â
âOh yeah. I forgot your proficiency in sport/sex metaphor.â I figured out at some point in middle school that all sports really come down to sexual euphemism. Ask any classical Athenian, especially Aristophanes. âWell, tell the newlyweds I said hello. And be sure to tell them how much you saved them on the open bar that night.â
I still couldnât help smirking at that. It was one of my better coups. I didnât rub it in too much, though. Dante really wasnât up to par yet, I could tell. I suppose I felt bad for him having been so under the weather.
I was up kind of early Saturday, like a kid excited about⦠well, what else, Christmas. Ben said heâd be by around noon to pick me up, and our tee time was at two. Serge and Jin were meeting us at the pro shop. This was officially the first double date Iâd ever been on.
When Ben picked me up, he said I looked great and asked me if I wanted to try out the extra clubs he brought. I was ready to reach into his shorts then and there, but apparently he meant the ones in his truck. Damn it. So there I was on the sidewalk of Highland Avenue with a golf club in my hands, adjusting my grip per Benâs instructions, and all I could think about was mutual masturbation. It was definitely bound to be an interesting day!
Benâs clubs were comfortable for me, so I decided to use those. I wasnât expecting to be very good anyway, so it didnât matter much to me about getting everything right. I really enjoyed the drive down to the course. Ben had on his Pandora eighties station and the windows open. The views up in the hills were beautiful, and the fresh air felt wonderful.
