I’m at a loss for words. I’ve never had anyone talk to me like that before. I’ve never been put on the spot the way he’s putting me now. I have no friends, so no one else sees what goes on behind closed doors, yet Torque can see it all.

“What are you going to do? Tell him about us?” I ask accusingly. Torque chuckles and steps toward me, his eyes menacing and dark.

“You’d think that, wouldn’t you? Do I look stupid to you?”

“I don’t understand where this is all coming from, Torque. What’s happening?” I ask him.

“What’s happenin’ is I’m fallin’ for you. I’m fucked in the head over you, and every time I think about that piece of shit comin’ near you, I wanna go to your house and light his ass on fire. I wanna watch him bleed out all over the goddamn livin’ room floor, and I want you standin’ by my side when I do it.” What the hell is wrong with him? What’s gotten into him tonight? Instead of listening to him speak that way, I quickly turn on my heel and head out of the weight room, but I know he’s behind me.

“Just walk away!”

“What do you want me to do? Entertain your ideas? That’s sick, Torque!” Everyone in the room can hear us now. They’re all watching, listening.

“What I want is to hear you say the goddamn words!”

“What words? What do you want me to say?”

“I want you to say that you’re gettin’ a divorce. That you’ve got a plan in place for you and Maria.”

“I can’t say that, not right now,” I admit, and it kills me. It kills a piece of my heart to say those words, but it’s the truth. I have nothing right now.

“Why? You just gonna let him beat on you until there’s nothin’ left. You want me to pick up the goddamn pieces of you, and then what? What about Maria?”

“Don’t drag my daughter into this, Torque. He hasn’t laid a fucking hand on her!”

“Until he does. Then what? How are you gonna stop him then?” My heart beats out of my chest as I let his words sink in. He’s right. Then what? How the hell will I stop him? He hasn’t touched her yet, but he’s come close on more than one occasion. Every drunken night he drags his ass through that door is another night of worry for me. Will it be the last time I see Maria? Will tonight be the night that he takes things too far? Everything has played over in my head, but I don’t answer because he’s a cop who gets what he wants.

“Don’t do this to me,” I beg, tears spilling down my cheeks. I can’t handle this.

“I’m not doin’ it. You are. Until you can walk in here and tell me you have a goddamn plan to get that little girl away from that monster, I can’t do this. I can’t be what you need, Laken.”

“You’re exactly what I need,” I cry.
