By now Tom had starred alongside so many A-listers, but never once was he star-struck. In fact, the only time he was ever fazed by meeting a famous person was at Wimbledon – ‘I tend to get star-struck by tennis players. I was at Wimbledon and I met Boris Becker. When I was a kid he was the greatest tennis player in the world. Now he’s a commentator and I really enjoy listening to him,’ he said.

When Thor: The Dark World was eventually released, once again Hiddleston was amazed by the response from fans. At the German premiere, one Loki fan even asked him to kneel before her – and so he did.

‘I do have an army of amazing fans and supporters,’ Tom admitted. ‘I’m very privileged. But when the going gets tough, I lean on my sisters and my best friends. They make me laugh.’

Even though he’d had ample time to get used to the idea, he still couldn’t get to grips with the notion of being a celebrity. Instead he preferred to emulate the attitude of actors he held in high esteem: people like Kenneth Branagh, Anthony Hopkins and Judi Dench who refused to be distracted by such things. Tom preferred to block out tabloid tales as ‘white noise’ – he just wanted to focus on the project in hand.
