There were wildflowers growing along the dusty road as the buggy clipped along. Blossom took a deep breath of the scent and smiled.

The captain said, “Wonderful day, isn’t it?”

She nodded, watching the sun glint on the shiny bars of his blue uniform. Blossom closed her eyes, reveling in the warm scents of summer. Sometimes it almost seemed as if she belonged back here in the old West, and it was getting more and more difficult to remember that she had come from 1995. Funny, she felt much more at home in this era than she ever had in her own time. When she read historical romances, she always felt that she had been born in the wrong period.

As the buggy moved down the road, she wondered if anyone back in L.A. realized she was missing? With her adoptive parents both dead, a shy, lonely research librarian wouldn’t be missed in the hustle of a big city. Probably her casual friends and fellow workers wouldn’t even notice; they’d think she’d quit and gone to work elsewhere, and she’d been planning to move to another apartment when she returned. With all the more exciting events in L.A., probably even Vic Lamarto hadn’t realized she was missing. Too bad he wasn’t like his ancestor.

She wondered just a moment about her lost luggage, which might even now still be turning on a carousel at an airport in Singapore or Florida. No one would know the difference or even care if she never came back. Would she even get to make a choice as to whether to go or stay?

The captain hummed a tune, a Stephen Foster number, Blossom thought, “Beautiful Dreamer.” That was certainly appropriate.

Beautiful dreamer, wake unto me, starlight and dewdrops are waiting for thee; sounds of the rude world heard in the day, lull’d by the moonlight have all passed away . . .

Blossom wondered again about the fate of the real Blossom May Westfield? “Did the troops do a thorough search when they went out to the scene of the stagecoach raid?”

The captain nodded, “It was horrible, Miss Blossom, something you don’t want to hear about.”

“You—you didn’t find any trace of missing people?”

His handsome face furrowed. “I can’t imagine who you’re thinking of, Miss Blossom, everyone’s accounted for.”

Except poor Blossom May Westfield, she thought. If I ask him to lead a search for her body, how will I explain myself? His fancy family won’t want him marrying some crazy person, and the little teacher is most assuredly dead. She remembered the memorial pictured in the museum book. They never did find her body, she thought, poor thing!

“The train will probably be late; it often is,” Lex said.

“That’s because they haven’t standardized time yet,” Blossom said without thinking. “In 1883, America will adopt four standardized time zones so trains can make all their connections.”

“That’s one of your predictions?” He was staring at her.

How could she tell him she was from the future? “I—well, at least, I feel that is what will happen.”

“You are an uncanny jewel,” he said, admiration in his tone.
