Chapter Twenty-Four

Frank parked his vehicle behind a mobile command center after flashing his shield to ESU members manning the perimeter. Getting out of the vehicle, Aaron, Frank and Jasika did a quick stretch before they were approached by an officer in tactical gear.

“Detective Torv?”

“That’s me,” Jasika responded. She then introduced Frank and Aaron.

“If you three will follow me.” The officer showed them into the mobile command center.

“Detective Torv?” An ESU officer greeted them upon entry. “I’m Lieutenant Tucker. Here’s what we have so far.” Tucker explained they were already linked to the NYPD counter-terrorism surveillance system. “We have a couple of Mavic Pro Quadcopters in the air. You can see their footage in real-time here,” Tucker said, pointing to a monitor built into the side of the truck. In front of the monitor, there was a small computer station operated by a technician. Frank could hear the man coordinating the drone efforts and camera feeds from several ESU personnel helmets.

“What have you seen?” Frank asked.

“Well, we’ve seen a few people coming in and out of the building. Facial recognition software pinged a couple of people who have existing warrants, so there is definitely some kind of criminal behavior going on there.”

“Interesting…” Aaron pondered. “Not quite sure why Daphne would work with known criminals. That’s definitely not like her.”

“Speaking of your suspect,” Tucker continued, “a woman in her mid-to-late twenties was seen entering the building about five minutes ago.”

“What did she look like?” Frank asked.

“We couldn’t get a good look. She was pretty bundled, so the drones couldn’t get a shot of her face.”

Just then, Frank’s phone vibrated. “Excuse me,” Frank said to the group. “Detective Schultt.”

“Detective,” ADA Popova said. “I have the warrant in hand. I’m sending it to the email address I have on file. Please let me know if you get it.”

Frank glanced at his phone and scrolled to his email. The first message was from the ADA, and the attached PDF was the signed search warrant. “Thanks! Got it.”

“Let me know what happens after you execute the warrant. I’ll be on my cell phone. I’ve already texted you the number.”

And she hung up. Definitely not one for small talk. “We have the warrant.” Lieutenant Tucker asked to see it, so Frank forwarded it to him.

After Tucker read through the parameters of the warrant, he said, “Wow, this warrant is broad. How did you manage to get this so quickly?”

“This case is tied to the case of the assassination of the FBI Director’s wife,” Frank said. “Apparently, that’s enough to put this search squarely with the Patriot Act.”

“Interesting,” Lieutenant Tucker said. He picked up a microphone and explained the warrant to his team. After finishing, he turned to the technician. “Everyone in place?”

“Yes, sir.”

“On my mark…” the lieutenant said. “Execute.”

Frank watched the helmet camera feed from ESU officers as they approached the building various entry points. On the monitors, Frank’s focus shot between four helmet cameras plus the two drones’ bird’s-eye views—one in front and one in back of the building.
