Chapter twenty-three

Callum

"Looks like wedding bells are on the horizon for you and Shannon Lennox. Can you confirm the rumors everyone is talking about?" Joe, the interviewer at Daytona, holds up a magazine. I cringe, seeing pictures from last weeks date plastered on the cover and remembering that god-awful date.

But I must play the game and act like it was all real, or it would've been all for nothing, right? "Joe, we're not here to talk about my love life, are we? Don't you have better things to ask me? Such as racing—the reason I'm here in the first place?" I sneer at that last part, not feeling bad about it.

I'll give him credit. Joe doesn't miss a beat. "Of course. So, the Los Angeles Coliseum race started out promising but ended with a wreck. How do you feel about that race and what should we expect from you today?"

"The wreck was unfortunate, but it happens. It was a tight track and there were quite a few wrecks throughout the race but we're back at Daytona and ready to get a win."

He nods and makes a few notes on a paper pad. "Daytona holds many memories for you since you were a kid. Is it hard racing on the track that he died on?"

I'm out of my seat and leaving the interview room before he can finish this sentence. How fucking dare he ask me a question like that!

"Callum!" I hear my name called behind me but I don't stop. I head right to the garage. I was among the last to interview, so we only have an hour before the race starts.

"Hey, Matthew, is everything ready for the race?" I ask, walking into the garage and spotting him and Eli with the crew.

"Hey Callum, how was the interview?" He says in greeting but when he sees the grimace on my face, he raises a brow, "That good?"

"They only want to talk about my love life or to remind me that my dad died here," I say and it's his turn to grimace.

I can see Eli in my periphery, moving about the car. It takes effort to focus on Matthew and not stare at Eli’s every move. I can tell he is in the zone and laser-focused on ensuring that every part of the car is up to his standards, which is high. I'll never tell him but sometimes I like to watch him when he gets like this. A complete juxtaposition compared to his carefree and happy façade but when he gets like this, he's severe and demanding. It's a side of him that I find the most intriguing and sexy as fuck.

"Fucking assholes. Do they not have the decency to leave well enough alone?" Matthew places a hand on my shoulder and squeezes it. "I was on the track that day. It could very well have been me who wrecked. You were so young. I can't imagine what that was like for you, what it would've been like for my own kids, had it been me.
