Chapter Seven

Resting on the ride to the club had served a dual purpose. One, it bolstered Sutter’s strength for the time he’d spend hunting for a willing dinner. He’d been shocked at how weak he’d felt when he stood, lending credence to Max’s persistent argument that he was in no shape to be on his own yet, and there’d been no small part of him that hadn’t wanted to crawl back into bed and sleep for another twenty-four hours.

The second, and more pressing reason, had been avoidance. That long in the cab of the truck, with Max in such close biting distance, had been more torturous than he’d anticipated. As much as he wanted to be his own vampire, he liked how Max wanted to take care of him. Some of Max’s intentions satisfied the guilt he carried around, but not all. Sutter liked the attraction that simmered between them, so close to boiling over at a moment’s notice.

Hell, he liked Max. That’s where the danger rested. He couldn’t afford getting attached, and he wasn’t so blind not to recognize how easy it could be. Max wouldn’t be a casualty in this, no matter how much he got in the way. Sutter would go back to the Den again before he let that happen.

He cast one more glance toward Max at the bar. Max perched on a stool, sipping at his bottle of beer, while Damon had wormed his way in to stand between his legs. Even from this distance, Sutter could scent the arousal on him, the lingering effects from the very brief encounter before he’d sent him on his way. For a moment, he wondered if that would change Max’s mind about Damon. He was horny, maybe any body would do.

But he tore his gaze away to sweep it over the club instead. It wasn’t his business if Max fucked Damon. It might be better for both of them if he did.

The club’s patrons were a mix of young and old, though college students prevailed. He needed somebody healthy and strong, easy to seduce but tough enough to take it when Sutter fed. Looks didn’t matter. In fact, his job would be easier if he chose someone who’d be flattered by his flirting.

He spotted him at a table near the back. Early thirties, a camo hunting cap pulled low over dark hair, thick hands cradling a beer bottle. He sat alone, watching the men on the dance floor, his broad features impassive. Sutter would bet anything he’d come alone, and right then decided he was going to do everything he could to make this night one the man could relish for weeks to come.

“Excuse me.” Though he kept his voice gentle, he still managed to startle his prey. At Sutter’s interruption, beer sploshed onto his hands and the table, prompting Sutter to leap forward. “Oh, I’m so sorry.” Tugging his cuff over the heel of his hand, he swiped at the spilled beer, though when he went to dry off the man, too, he jerked away.
