With the death of beauty and innocence, the Twilight begins. Then comes the "fimbul winter," three years of endless winter that burden humanity, making the earthly kingdoms battle one another. The bonds that hold the monsters of the world are broken, and Midgard Serpent, Fenris the Wolf, and Loki himself raise an army of giants, monsters and Hell-dwellers to destroy Asgard.

Odin and Thor lead the heavenly armies in response, and the battle of Ragnarök begins. Thor focused his attentions on his ancient enemy: Jörmungandr, the Midgard Serpent. Their battle is epic, and in the end Thor slays his enemy with Mjölnir. However, he is bitten in the process, and after the Serpent dies, Thor takes only nine paces before collapsing and suffocating from the monster's venom. The toll of the dead is staggering, including Odin, Loki and Freya. The world-tree Ygdrasil is burned, and only two humans survive in her bark. However, the world has not ended. Out of the ashes is born a new and far more beautiful world, one which a resurrected Balder rules. Thor, however, is no more.[23]
